Sometimes it feels like a painting paints itself, but not usually when I am painting a portrait commission. This painting of dear Esko however, is an exception.
I have been wondering why this was so. Kati sent me 14 photos and told me her favourite which was the main one I used for the portrait. I used the others to check his eyes and other details, so I had plenty of different views of this handsome gentlemen. I never met Esko but I had heard about him (not just from Kati), so I already knew something of his character. Esko is already one the brightest stars shining in the night sky and is dearly missed. Maybe he was watching over my shoulder and guiding me as I was applying the paint to the canvas... Probably it's a combination of all of the above as to why it felt like the portrait painted itself.
